What is a montadito?

In Andalusia, a montadito is a mini sandwich made with small bread and salty filling, very typical of tapas and informal bars. It is usually eaten in a couple of bites and can be served hot or cold, with ingredients such as ham, loin, lomo, larded meat, cheese, canned fish or pringá.

In places like Seville, moreover, the montadito has a lot of personality: it is not just “a little sandwich”, but a very carefully prepared piece of food, sometimes with its own name and very recognisable combinations. That is why, in practice, the Andalusian montadito is halfway between a tapa and a small sandwich, designed to be eaten standing up, at the bar or to be shared without formalities.
